OUR COMPOSERS

MANUEL PELAYO

INTERVIEW

1) Which instrument do you use to compose?

Mainly piano and sometimes I will take to approach towards creating the sound texture I need, after that I will use that instrument to compose what I am looking for.

2) With which composers of the past (or of the present) are you connected?

Danny Elfman, Hans Zimmer, Ludovico Einaudi, Trent Reznor, Johann Johannss, James Horner

3) What does inspire you when creating music for a movie?

I like to have a talk with Directors about the background of the story, What situations got us to the start of the movie. This helps me to understand better characters and why they are here. I am always trying to translate the character’s personality into musical sounds.

4) Can you explain to our followers what’s the difference between an “Ambient” and a “New Age” track?

They are very similar and linked with each other. I would say the main difference is that Ambient has more ambiguous rhythms and melodies. New age tend to have mor memorable themes and rhythms.

5) When you compose do you choose the mood, or you leave that the atmosphere of the track comes out spontaneously?

It works both ways. But most of the time I tend to let the muse speak to me and sometimes interesting stuff comes out.

6) Do you use some specific techniques to develop musical motives?

Counterpoint is one of them, my techniques would rely more on orchestrations and harmonies. I like to breaje the rules every now and then.

7) Do you prefer to write Adventure-Discovery or Romantic-Sentimental when creating a soundtrack?

Adventure- Discovery for sure!

8) How to create a motivational track for Corporate Videos?

Depends on the message the Corporation wants to communicate to their consumers. I guess this is where choosing instruments and genre for the music comes from.

9) Nowadays we have great quality sound libraries, which allow us to compose without going in a recording studio, how do you use these libraries?

They are my main tool, my only organic recording instruments are guitar and sometimes voices. The challenge of this libraries I think is, making them sound human enough to avoid sounding like a cell ringtone or a computer playing an orchestra. Modulation and dynamics are key to achieve this.

10) What would you advise to someone who wants to become a composer?

Be passionate about writing music and look for your own musical voice that no one else is able to give to listeners. This would make your work unique, creative and strong if it is honest enough.
